The ‘Mobil-O-Graph’ Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor
How we use it within the Swindon Walk-In-Centre

The Swindon Walk-In-Centre was approached by the Swindon Primary Care Group
(PCG) late last year to set up and run a 24 hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Service.
We are conveniently located within Swindon Town Centre and are ideally located for
patient access.

The PCG wanted to reduce waiting times for the service which was provided by the hospital. Our aim was to reduce drug expenditure for inappropriate use of anti-
hypertensive therapy and also monitor the ‘Grey Area’ of patients whom we need to
clarify their level of hypertension and therefore appropriate therapy.

The first task we faced was acquiring the equipment, three different recorders were
tested before we made the decision to purchase ‘Mobil-O-Graph’ from Numed Cardiac
Diagnostics.

Reasons why we purchased the device are as follows:
Cost: Mobil-O-Graph is very cost effective and presented us with no consumable costs
(apart from normal wear and tear). The device was supplied with rechargeable batteries,
a charger and three various sized cuffs. Also included are all manuals and Windows Management Software.

Ease of Use: Mobil-O-Graph is very simple using the Oscilometric method, no
electrodes or microphone.
After Sales Support: Comprehensive training is included at the time of delivery, the
device is calibrated at the annual routine service.

Highly Validated: Proven accuracy, Mobil-O-Graph achieved grade ‘A’ for measurement
accuracy by the British Hypertension Society protocol. We purchased a total of five devices and soon placed them into service after their prompt delivery.

The service operates very simply, a request form was designed and sent to all General
Practices which is faxed to the Walk-In-Centre with patient details and contact number. A
convenient appointment is then made directly with the patient.

The set up of the device is very simple, patient name and number are entered into the
device from the computer. This ensures that on their return there can be no confusion as
to whom the measurements belong to. Once the patient returns, the data is downloaded
onto the PC and a result is issued immediately.

Since starting more than 400 people have used the service, we have encountered very
few problems during this initial period and are now in a position where demand has
increased to a level where we feel it to be appropriate to purchase more Mobil-O-Graph
monitors.

Coincidentally, on testing the devices I was found to be hypertensive and after consultation are now on drug therapy to manage my blood pressure.

I highly recommend the device and unequivocally see the many benefits of running the
service.
